This session provides you with what your site needs to stop bullying: a research-driven framework and solution-based strategies for ending peer cruelty and mobilizing student compassion. You will learn the Six Proven Essential R’s that reduce bullying, and view actual examples of how many North American schools are implementing those practices. Don’t Give Me That Attitude!
Teaching the Other ABC’s for Changing Attitude, Behavior & Character

Cheating. Bullying. Disrespect. Irresponsibility. Self-Centered. Bad-Tempered. Sound familiar? Statistics show that the character of far too many students has taken a nosedive. Based on Dr. Borba’s best-selling book, Don’t Give Me That Attitude!, participants learn the “Other Essential ABCs”(Attitude, Behavior, and Character) that will turn this troubling youth trend around. You’ll hear inspiring stories of educators and youth advocates who are making a difference, see showcase examples from schools who are applying these strategies, and leave with simple ways to weave character building strategies into your already existing lessons to curb those bad attitudes once and for all! After all, the goal of character education is to change behavior and attitudes so students can and do talk and walk good character.

Reaching At-Risk Youth
Ways to Really Reach Them So You Can Teach Them

Character education programs work usually for around 85% of our students – but what about the other 15%? Here is how to help your struggling students learn the habits of good character. This session focuses on practical, proven ways and best practices to connect with troubled, at risk youth so we reach them to teach them and ultimately help them succeed. Proven school-wide At-Risk strategies as well as one-to-one mentoring connectors will be offered that have been shown to turn even the most difficult students around. You’ll learn techniques for identifying high-risk students, connectors to rebuild trust and boost discouraged students’ self-esteem and resilience, and a wealth of proven tips for strengthening the self-control hard to manage students’ as well as reframe existing violent self-beliefs. Participants will also learn the seven steps to C.H.A.N.G.E.S. (a behavior intervention strategy developed by Dr. Borba for difficult youth) as well as have the opportunity to develop customized intervention plans for specific troubled students.

Breaking the Cycle of Youth Violence: What Really Works!

Aggression is learned --- but so too is peacefulness. This session offers specific techniques for breaking the cycle of violence that plagues our youth. Participants will learn the four steps to “Violentization,” the warning signs for troubled youth as well as the critical conditions that create emotionally safe climates. Participants will also learn how to break the cycle of youth violence with positive behavior interventions, reframe violent self-images, cultivate empathy in desensitized youth, and replace aggressive behaviors with healthier alternatives. You will also learn ways to help students resolve everyday conflicts, to stay calmer and handle anger in healthier ways, and defuse hostility. This session is especially designed for youth helpers who deal with “high need” students. The steps, strategies and framework for breaking the cycle of youth violence are based on Dr. Borba’s “Proposal to End School Violence” she wrote and developed for the State of California and was signed into law (SB1667) in January 2003.

The Five Building Blocks of Resilience and Self-Esteem

This “hands-on” workshop is designed to help teachers recognize simple yet powerful ways to strengthen their classroom environment to enhance students’ self-esteem and in the process improve their students’ behavior, character, resilience, and achievement. The workshop provides strategies for identifying low esteem students and a model for esteem-building based on the five building blocks in Dr. Borba’s best-selling book, Esteem Builders which is used by over one and half millions students worldwide: Security, Selfhood, Affiliation, Mission and Competence.
